In Central Otago: The Arrow River Bridges Trail leaves the heart of Arrowtown's historic precinct and runs 23 gently undulating kilometres into Gibbston wine country — a Grade 2 (easy) ride that crosses the Edgar Suspension Bridge before joining the Gibbston River Trail at the Kawarau Bungy Bridge. Count the daredevils as you cross. Check in at Ramshaw Lane, Arrowtown, at 10.20am for a bike fitting and trail briefing, and explore the old gold-mining township — ruins, galleries, the Lakes District Museum — before riding east above the Kawarau River. Call in at whichever Gibbston cellar doors take your fancy; every winery on the route is marked on your trail map. Towards the end of the afternoon, roll in to Mt Rosa Wines, where the Kiwi Journeys depot is located — there might even be time for a cooling refreshment before the 5pm shuttle returns you to Arrowtown by 5.15pm.
