Ribera del Duero Tour: Two Wineries with Transport from Madrid
Why travelers loved this
4.9 · 1 reviewMy wife and I booked a 3-day/2-night private tour with Michael through the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. We had an incredible, unforgettable experience and would highly recommend Vine Travel. The website promises a “wine trip that feels less like a tour and more like being let in on a secret” . . . and Michael more than delivers! Over three days, we met the coolest local wine producers and families. Michael has built genuine relationships across these regions. This allowed special access to cellars and vineyards, to private tastings, and to so many personal and authentic interactions with local winemakers. We rode a Hummer to the top of one of the highest vineyards in Rioja. We explored the centuries-old cellars and caves of historic properties. We tasted an aging reserve wine from the barrel at one winery; and a much younger wine not long after harvest from another. We walked through wine making processes and had countless fun discussions (over wine) with owners, experts, and passionate locals. We tasted as much wine as we could have asked. During our trip, Michael make sure we enjoyed and appreciated the most incredible local villages, vineyards, and viewpoints. You will be blown away by the beauty, history, and character of the region. Michael also arranged some terrific meals. (Don’t miss the pintxos crawl on Calle Laurel in Logroño.) Michael is knowledgeable, well-regarded, and fun. We were blessed to spend a private 3-day tour with him. I’d recommend that you trust him in winery recommendations and planning. We did – and we were blown away with the trip, with unique experiences each day. Michael also helped us to arrange a shipment of wine back to the U.S., so we could remember (and enjoy again) each of our special winery visits.
About This Experience
Two premium Ribera del Duero bodegas, six guided tastings, and transport from Madrid handled door to door: this is the focused version of Spain's boldest red wine region, built for travellers who want Ribera's essentials in a single well-paced day. The tour takes you directly into the heart of the region, where the two wineries are selected for wine quality, family heritage or unique architecture, and always for contrast. One stop might be a traditional ageing cellar, the next a modern, terroir-focused winery; between them they map where Ribera has been and where it is going. At each bodega you take a guided tasting of three wines, six in total, built around Tempranillo, known locally as Tinta Fina, the grape behind Ribera's deep, structured reds. You will learn how the Duero plateau's extreme climate, freezing nights and scorching days, concentrates the fruit, and why these wines age with such authority. Lunch is optional and local, and worth planning for: around €45 per person buys a proper Castilian meal with wine and coffee in wine country, and your guide will steer you to the tables worth the time. Keeping lunch flexible also keeps the day yours; some groups linger over lechazo, others prefer a second cellar hour. Practicalities are all included: air-conditioned vehicle from Madrid, snacks and bottled water on board, and the six tastings across both wineries. Tours run in English and Spanish, and the route home lands you back in the capital with the evening intact. Your date is confirmed instantly online, with flexible cancellation up to 48 hours before departure, and Wine Trails books direct with no middleman markup on the price. Ribera del Duero built its reputation on power, Tinta Fina at high altitude, aged with patience, and this day delivers that reputation in its two best formats: an old cellar that remembers everything, and a new one betting on the future. Six glasses later, you will have an opinion in the oldest argument in Spanish wine: Rioja or Ribera. There are worse ways to choose a side.
