My wife and I booked a 3-day/2-night private tour with Michael through the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. We had an incredible, unforgettable experience and would highly recommend Vine Travel. The website promises a “wine trip that feels less like a tour and more like being let in on a secret” . . . and Michael more than delivers! Over three days, we met the coolest local wine producers and families. Michael has built genuine relationships across these regions. This allowed special access to cellars and vineyards, to private tastings, and to so many personal and authentic interactions with local winemakers. We rode a Hummer to the top of one of the highest vineyards in Rioja. We explored the centuries-old cellars and caves of historic properties. We tasted an aging reserve wine from the barrel at one winery; and a much younger wine not long after harvest from another. We walked through wine making processes and had countless fun discussions (over wine) with owners, experts, and passionate locals. We tasted as much wine as we could have asked. During our trip, Michael make sure we enjoyed and appreciated the most incredible local villages, vineyards, and viewpoints. You will be blown away by the beauty, history, and character of the region. Michael also arranged some terrific meals. (Don’t miss the pintxos crawl on Calle Laurel in Logroño.) Michael is knowledgeable, well-regarded, and fun. We were blessed to spend a private 3-day tour with him. I’d recommend that you trust him in winery recommendations and planning. We did – and we were blown away with the trip, with unique experiences each day. Michael also helped us to arrange a shipment of wine back to the U.S., so we could remember (and enjoy again) each of our special winery visits.

About This Experience

Forty-five minutes from the centre of Madrid, a family-run winery is pouring for a small group led by a professional sommelier, and one of the seats is yours. This half-day tour is the short escape the capital hides: real vineyards, a historic cave cellar, and a guided tasting, all without giving up a full day of your trip. The format is deliberately intimate. Small groups only, a sommelier as your guide, and a single carefully selected winery rather than a checklist of stops. You walk the vineyards or descend into the historic cave, learn how the wine is actually made, and then taste at least three wines from local varieties with the sommelier talking you through each glass. That sommelier is what separates this from a standard winery visit. Whether you are a beginner who wants to finally understand what you are tasting or an enthusiast chasing Spain's less exported grapes, the tasting is tailored to the group in front of them. Questions are the point, not an interruption. Madrid's own wine region is one of Spain's best-kept secrets, overshadowed by Rioja and Ribera del Duero yet producing serious wines from old vines within sight of the capital. Tasting it at the source, with time to explore the estate afterwards, gives you a wine story most visitors to Madrid never hear. The practical side is fully handled: private transportation from Madrid, bottled water, snacks, and all fees and taxes are included. Tours run in English and Spanish, and the half-day format slots neatly into a morning or afternoon, leaving the rest of your day for the Prado or a long Madrid lunch. It also travels well across a Madrid itinerary: pair a morning tour with an afternoon at the Reina Sofía, or taste in the afternoon and be back for tapas hour in La Latina. Because the winery sits so close to the city, none of your evening plans are at risk, which makes this the rare wine tour you can book on a whim mid-trip. Your booking is confirmed instantly online, with free cancellation up to 48 hours before the tour, and Wine Trails books direct with no middleman markup added. If your time in Madrid is short but your interest in Spanish wine is not, this is the highest-value half day you can spend: a working winery, a cave that predates your guidebook, a sommelier's attention, and three-plus wines that taste better where they are grown. The small-group seats often go first, so pick your date early.
